Viscose: the Versatile Man-made Fibre for Decoration and Contract Fabrics with a Natural Feel
03/01/2022
Viscose (CV) is a cellulosic man-made fibre obtained from regenerated wood cellulose, typically eucalyptus, beech or bamboo. Through a chemical process of dissolution and extrusion, natural cellulose is transformed into a continuous filament that is spun into fibre. The result is a material with a soft, silky hand feel, good drape, excellent dye affinity and breathability similar to natural fibres.
Viscose occupies a middle ground between natural and synthetic fibres: it provides the aesthetics and comfort of the former with the regularity and productive versatility of the latter. In interior decoration, it is used in curtain fabrics, sheers, light upholstery and textile accessories.

Viscose in contract fabrics and hospitality applications
In the contract sector, viscose is primarily used in blends with polyester (PES/CV) or cotton (CO/CV), contributing softness and drape to fabrics that need to combine aesthetics with resistance. Its moisture absorption and cool touch make it particularly suitable for curtain fabrics in hotels and restaurants.
Viscose is also the base cellulosic fibre in the devore technique, where its selective dissolution creates the characteristic semi-transparent motifs. In the context of sustainable contract textiles, variants such as lyocell (Tencel) and modal — produced with closed-loop processes — represent greener alternatives within the cellulosic family.
