Textile Fibres in Decoration: How to Choose the Right Fabric for Interior Design and Contract
A textile fibre is each of the filaments that, once grouped and twisted, form the yarns from which fabrics are manufactured. The raw material from which each fibre is obtained determines its mechanical properties, visual appearance and behaviour when exposed to external agents such as light, moisture or fire.

In interior decoration and the contract sector — hotels, hospitals, care homes and public spaces — the choice of fibre directly affects the durability, maintenance and aesthetics of the fabric. Fibres are classified into two main families according to their origin:

1. Natural fibres: derived from organic materials of mineral, plant or animal origin. They require minimal processing before being spun.
2. Manufactured fibres: obtained through chemical processes from natural polymers (cellulosic) or synthetic polymers (petroleum-derived).

Natural fibres versus manufactured fibres in interior decoration

Each fibre type brings distinctive characteristics to the final fabric. Natural fibres such as cotton (CO), linen (LI) or wool (WO) offer a pleasant hand feel, good moisture absorption and a warm aesthetic that is highly valued in residential and hospitality projects. However, they may be more sensitive to abrasion and staining.

Synthetic fibres such as polyester (PES) or acrylic (PAC) stand out for their wear resistance, dimensional stability and ease of maintenance. In contract applications, where fabrics are subjected to intensive use, these fibres are particularly suitable. Man-made fibres such as viscose (CV) or lyocell combine the softness of natural fibres with greater production consistency.

The current trend in sustainable contract textile design combines both fibre types, seeking the balance between technical performance and environmental responsibility.

Choosing the right fibre for each interior design project

Fibre selection must respond to the specific demands of each space. In hotel interiors, where contract fabrics must withstand continuous use and comply with fire-retardant regulations, FR-treated polyester fabrics are a standard choice. For curtains in high-end residential spaces, linen and cotton blends provide lightness and a natural feel.

At Aznar Textil, as contract textile manufacturers in Spain with over 140 years of experience, we design and manufacture collections that range from plain fabrics and jacquards to sheers, prints and upholstery. Each collection is developed by selecting the fibres best suited to the fabric's function, with performance certified to standards such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and ISO 9001. We export to more than 85 countries, enabling us to understand the demands of international markets and adapt our fibre compositions to local regulations.
