Cotton: the Essential Natural Fibre in Fabrics for Decoration and Hotel Contract
06/01/2022
Cotton (CO) is the most widely used plant fibre in the global textile industry. Obtained from the boll of the cotton plant (Gossypium), it is characterised by its soft hand feel, excellent moisture absorption capacity and great versatility in decoration and interior design applications. Fibre length — ranging from 10 to 60 mm depending on variety — determines yarn quality: long-staple varieties (such as Egyptian cotton or Supima) produce finer, stronger yarns with less tendency to pill.
In interior decoration, cotton is the basis for a wide range of fabrics: canvas, panama, piqué, satin, chintz and etamine. Its affinity with dyes yields vivid, fast colours, and its washing behaviour — dimensional stability when sanforised — makes it a reference material for intensive use.
